Character name: Benika Juuzawa
Fandom: Kure-nai
Timeline: After chapter 30 when Yuuno Hozuki is saved and her fight with Zena Hoshigami and probably after the 4th wall event where she's stayed on the S.S. Loki for about two months!
Age: Unknown, but speculating and saying that she's probably in her middle to late thirties.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Honestly this is hard to say (damn you vague manga pages!!) But Benika's a top class dispute mediator meaning she helps settles fights which still involves a high level of violence and taking names (you know despite the "mediating" part which still does happen)! Mediating ranges from saving hostages to being a bodyguard. Anyways, when she doesn't have to fight she's quite good at calm negotiating and settling squabbles and even gets jobs this way for her employee/disciple, Shinkuro. Simply put, she's good at getting connections and maintaining them.
It seems that a lot of her clients hire her for her more forceful persuasions aka her fighting abilities and for good reason. Benika's a woman full of sheer and almost unnatural strength and speed to the point where she can simply walk through the front doors of a building full of armed goons and take them all out by herself while wielding only a single firearm. Her endurance is most likely very refined as well since she rarely shows signs of tiring out despite going against multiple opponents.
How would they use their abilities?: She'll probably stick to mediating and doing negotiations (forceful or not) among aliens and refugees. Might as well find missions that fits her skill set after all!
Appearance: Benika is rather tall and imposing for a woman with a curvaceous body. She's usually clothed in a red business-like suit with a matching skirt and there's always a large overcoat which hangs over her shoulders. She has light brown wavy hair and light brown eyes. Benika is almost never seen without a lit cigarette in her mouth.
Background/Personality:
Shinkuro Kurenai is an orphaned high school boy who works as a dispute mediator, a person who settles squabbles between two parties. His line of work tends to get very dangerous and he has many run ins with the ruling families of Japan and underground mercenary and crime groups. He gets his assistance from hisunwanted harem friends (who are mostly girls...) which includes a martial arts master, an information broker, a child from a rich family, and all other sorts of colorful characters. This app ISN'T about him though! Shinkuro would have never found himself on the path of a mediator had it not been for a chance meeting with a top class mediator known as Benika Juuzawa who is known to all sorts of people.
This fearsome dispute mediator first met Shinkuro when he was but a wee little lad. It wasn't the most pleasant of meetings however. One day a crime group targeted Shinkuro's elementary school in broad daylight killing several adults and kidnapping all the children to ship and sell abroad to some foreign country. Or at least they were going to sell the girls since they would fetch a higher price. The young boys were to be disposed of and Shinkuro was to be shot next. Despite his childhood friend, Ginko Murakami, trying to protect him, the young Shinkuro was gladly looking forward to death so he could reunite with his family who had died in a terrorist attack years before.
Enter Benika Juuzawa: it took only this one woman to march into the ship and shoot up all the armed mooks that had kidnapped all the children without so much as breaking a sweat. Shinkuro was amazed at her strength and found that he desired to be the same, snapping him out of his wish for death. After she was done fighting, Benika found herself being approached by Shinkuro who asked her to let him be her disciple so that he could be strong like her. When she asked why, it was a simple answer from him that made her reach a decision: "I want to live."
Benika seemed touched or at least intrigued by Shinkuro when he made his appeal to her and thus accepted him. If anything she was just as amused by this turn of events especially after finding out that her name and Shinkuro's were written with the same kanji despite the different pronunciation and wondered if it was fate that had them meet. She decided that she would teach Shinkuro the ropes of being a dispute mediator while finding a different teacher to help him become a fighter that could withstand the danger that would come in her line of work. Benika introduced him to the Hozuki family (one of the thirteen generations of the Ura Family, meaning their members are known for being assassins; their numbers are dwindling in the modern age though) whose master taught Shinkuro and the eldest daughter Yuuno Hozuki the family style of martial arts, giving the former the skills and endurance needed to be a dispute mediator.
Shinkuro saw another display of Benika's strength and influence when she brought him along for one of her jobs where a hostage situation was taking place. He saw how the police authorities recognized her on sight and how she took a megaphone to fearlessly threaten the criminals. A few minutes later after entering the building, the situation was solved. Ass was kicked, hostages were saved, and Benika made an example out of the bad guys.
Okay, if you couldn't tell already, Benika is basically the person Shinkuro looks up to the most god it's so obvious. But what of Benika herself? That's actually a difficult question to answer because she is rather enigmatic. She reveals little personal information about herself and she's usually embroiled in her job. What we DO know is that she used to work for one of the three ruling families of Japan, the Kuhouin and used that job to build some capital, make connections, and then leave to work as a mediator along with her subordinate Yayoi Inuzuka. Oh wait, the Kuhouin family is a good place to start sweet.
So anyways a younger Benika had worked for the Kuhouin family that is incredibly wealthy and influential, but had a disturbing secret which Benika was privy to. The women of the Kuhouin bloodline are not listed in the public family registry and are kept in a location called the Inner Sanctuary, to be treated as tools to bear the clan's children through incestual relations (the reason for this is not clear although it may have something to do with hereditary problems where Kuhouin children can only be born in this manner oh god this is suddenly spiraling into terrible).
Benika was able to befriend one of the Kuhouin women, Souju. Being much more rash and idealistic back then, Benika offered to take Souju away from the Inner Sanctuary so she wouldn't have to be subjugated under such a system. Souju kindly refused the offer saying that she was fine with the way things were especially she wasn't exactly mistreated in the Inner Sanctuary and in a way was shielded from the cruelties of the outside. Benika was not convinced and Souju admitted that maybe she wasn't completely fine. Instead she has Benika make a promise: if Souju bore a girl child, Benika would grant the child's wish wish. The future mediator hesitantly accepted.
Quite a number of years later and after she met Shinkuro, Benika encountered the now deceased Souju's seven year old daughter, Murasaki Kuhouin. Like her mother before her, Murasaki wasn't entirely hating (sorta) on the whole staying in the Inner Sanctuary, but she did realize there was a lack of something, that little something being "love." Murasaki asked Benika if she could grant her wish of experiencing love. Benika, again is sort of "man what the hell is it with kids asking me to do weird philosophical things," but she is determined to keep her promise to her dear friend.
So she kidnapped Murasaki and brought her to Shinkuro so he can protect her and help the kid learn about the outside world and enjoy life! YAY. Benika was not only doing this to fulfill her promise, but she also believed that Shinkuro would benefit from befriending Murasaki. All things considered, things do actually go well for a while until Murasaki's second oldest brother, Ryuuji Kuhouin, decided to ruin regular happy fun time and take back his sister. Yeah, remember that thing with the incest and how maybe things aren't all that good with the Kuhouins in the Inner Sanctuary... Yeaaaaaaah. Apparently SEVEN YEARS OLD isn't stopping Ryuuji from trying to take advantage of his sister especially since their father and eldest brother were out of the country. Murasaki who was deadly afraid of her brother goes along with him after a hired goon beats up Shinkuro. When he comes to, Benika is there to give him the details of what exactly is going on with the Kuhouins and what their deal is.
Benika accompanied Shinkuro who has decided to man up and rescue Murasaki (and she is very proud of him for this) despite his friend's protests against defying a powerful family. Everything turns out okay though! Benika covered for Shinkuro at the front gates taking down every armed goon by herself (okay fine Yayoi helped too) and Shinkuro won his battles and saved Murasaki. Teacher and student meet Murasaki's dad who happens to come in on time to see the end of these shenanigans. Daddy Kuchouin and Benika shared some snarky banter where again she made it clear that she was fulfilling a promise to Souju so DEAL WITH IT. Afterwards, Murasaki is finally free to leave the Inner Sanctuary with her father's permission.
NOW WE CAN FINALLY FAST FORWARD TO THE PRESENT DAY SHEESH. Benika continues doing her job and checks up on Shinkuro every once and a while, sometimes sending a commission his way when times are tough. One of those commissions leads Benika and Shinkuro overseas where they both cross paths with an hitman (or hitwoman in this case) nicknamed "Guillotine" aka Kirihiko Kirishima. It is Benika who gives more information about the company which "Guillotine" works for, which is the Akuu Company, an underworld mercenary group that takes on any job requiring force whether criminal or not. Needless to say, these guys are dangerous and surely we will never encounter them again, yes we do.
There's trouble afoot and Yuuno Hozuki is taken by the Akuu Company and the former Hozuki predecessor to be sold to a client interested in the Hozuki bloodline. Benika is there to literally knock some sense into Shinkuro to dispel his doubts of his weakness and relight his determination to save his friend. She helps hold off one of the Akuu Company fighters, Zena Hoshigami, while Shinkuro goes a-rescuing. It seems that Zena Hoshigami has a particular interest in fighting and defeating Benika who is obviously known to underworld circles such as the Akuu Co. Yuuno is saved and the match between Benika and Zena ends in a stalemate with Benika just ollie-ing on out because she's done with helping Shinkuro.
Everything is fine and dandy for Benika! FOR NOW.
Personality:
Since there's so little known about Benika Juuzawa it can be easy to dismiss her as a cold-blooded and business minded woman with little regards to other people. She is infamous in the underworld of Japan and other parts of society even outside of the country due to her strength as a fighter and capabilities as a dispute mediator. Benika is not afraid to use force and kills when she needs to. It's part of her job after all and a reason why she's so well-known and has made her enemies in certain places. All of this is true minus being completely cold-blooded and business minded for her student Shinkuro Kurenai would not look up to her with such reverence if that were so.
Benika is still very much human and isn't above expressing emotions extending beyond her usual calm and collected nature. She has shown warmth, understanding, a sense of mild humor, and a willingness to do what's right especially for the people that count. These traits are seen more by her disciple Shinkuro compared to anyone (and she herself sees him as her son so there's your maternal affection there), but she's still amicable even towards people she's not familiar with. This doesn't mean that she coddles people, especially not her student. She's someone who tells it like it is and places an importance on being certain and going through with the choices one makes. As she's said to Shinkuro before, there may not be any correct choices in the world, but when you make one, it's up to a person to make it right. And that's what Benika constantly does by using her strength and willfulness. While strong and forceful when need be though, she is hardly one to obstruct the happiness of others which is why she never forced her friend Souju to leave her home or turn away the wish of a boy who clearly needed a reason to live.
She doesn't express many other interests seeing as how her job occupies her time, but it doesn't stop Benika from visiting Shinkuro and even engaging in an activity or two with him and his friends (some mild socialization doesn't hurt after all). If anything though, Benika appears to at least have a spot in her heart for children seeing as how she didn't turn away from a younger Shinkuro's request to be her disciple or Murasaki's wish to know what love was. She even temporarily stopped pursuing Kirihiko when she found out that the girl assassin actually killed a target involved in child trafficking. But Benika claims not to be good with children which is why she has Shinkuro train with the Hozuki's instead of her and why she made him watch Murasaki later.
In a way, there's something honorable about Benika that sets her apart from more bloodthirsty fighters with more negative mindsets. Her harrowing occupation as a mediator actually helps her get to know people and to still have the capacity for compassion and sincerity even if it inconveniences her. And if there's a problem, she'll be determined enough to set it right with all of her strength.
